What Happens to a Recycled Car? The Car Recycling Process

Step 1: depollution
At the scrap yard, everything that can pollute is removed first: fuel, engine oil, coolant, brake and transmission fluid, A/C refrigerant. The battery and tires go to their own recycling streams.
Step 2: parts recovery
Parts still in good shape — engine, transmission, alternator, starter, doors, lights, rims — are removed and resold as used auto parts. The catalytic converter is recovered for its precious metals.

Step 3: metal recycling
The shell is crushed and shredded, and the metals — steel, aluminum, copper — are sorted and melted down for reuse.
